Long-term effects of the aging population on the property market
The make-up of New Zealand’s population is changing, which will have an effect on where people will choose to live, as well as the types of housing that are demanded. These changes in housing needs have the potential to create a mismatch between the stock of available housing and the kinds of dwellings ideally suited to people, given increased numbers of retirees and a falling proportion of children in the population, for example. We look at where the biggest changes to the composition of the population are likely to occur and examine the possible imbalances in the property market that could result from these changes.
