Government surplus hides rising Crown costs
Earlier in October, the Treasury unveiled the latest Crown accounts. The result was a bigger-than-expected surplus of $5.5b for the year ending June 2018. This surprisingly large surplus undermines the government’s position at a time when higher fuel prices and public-sector pay negotiations are being hotly debated.
