Farewell to the McMansions
The average size of new dwellings in New Zealand dipped from 200m2 to 190m2 between June 2010 and March 2012. This decline made sense given the belt-tightening that occurred throughout the economy in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis. But despite a brief rally in 2013, the average size of new dwellings has maintained a steady downward trend over the last five years – despite a strong performance by the New Zealand economy throughout this period.
