Truck driver monitoring: the thin end of a wedge?

A recent survey of truck drivers suggests that low pay, long hours, and the intensification of driver scrutiny are the reasons people are leaving the profession. In an industry characterised by intense competition and slim profit margins, the news that truck drivers are being forced to work longer hours to boost their pay packets is (unfortunately) old news. But, the effect of driver monitoring is a relatively new phenomenon. Why is it happening now, can we expect it to continue and how will it change the truck driving profession?
